Princess Handbook

Princess Handbook

"On first glance I thought this little spiral book was quite cute. It has some good ideas - that princesses should be kind and graceful - but the book really lost me when it said that princesses never run, not ever. I understand that this book isn't intended for every word to be taken literally but I was still very disappointed. In an age when childhood obesity is on the rise, I think we should be encouraging all of our little princesses to run and run, rather than discouraging them from running."

London

London

"An excellent bedtime book for our three year old daughter; I've lost count of the number of times we've read it. Londonium and ice skating on the Thames were real hits. Plenty of 'spot the artist' pages in there for adults as well. A great series."

This is my duck

This is my duck

"I bought this book a year and a half ago for my grandson who turns 3 this coming November. HE LOVES IT!!! So much so that it is almost wore out. The pictures are just too cute and the colors are awesome! On a scale of 1 to 10 and 10 being the best...I would have to rate this book at 12 plus because it started my grandson's "love for books" and for that, there is not a rating high enough."

The dressing-up box

The dressing-up box

"I was a little stunned to find that my daughter was 'reading' out loud from this book as soon as she picked it up. Okay, so she is no reading prodigy it turns out, they just have a set at her nursery, so she is quite familiar with the story and was 'reading the pictures'. Great that it captured her imagination so fast though. According to her nursery they have been a big hit. We both appreciated the artwork, me for the modern quirky pictures and she for the way they show children imagining different dressing up adventures. I like the way the book swaps between a page for parent to read and a page for the child to read so that reading together is really emphasised. The themes of the whole series look varied and appealing (space, zoo, pirates, animals, circus). The system is based on learning to read with synthetic phonics. As always with Usborne books, eyecatching and enticing. If you are trying to teach a child to read I would recommend."

Lots of things to draw

Lots of things to draw

"We love this book. Our 6yr old carries it with her everywhere. She easily follows the picture instructions and her sister and friends have all enjoyed it too. I will never again be asked to draw something for her - she just looks it up and draws it for herself. Get ready to have fingers itching for a pen and paper..."

Ghost in the Mirror

Ghost in the Mirror

"I remember reading most of the books in this series when I was a child in the mid to late-80s but the Ghost in the Mirror really sticks in the mind for some reason, eerie atmosphere and great puzzles (although I'm fairly sure I cheated quite a lot!)."

Summer things to make and do

Summer things to make and do

"The title really speaks for itself - an art and craft book of summer-related things to draw, paint and make. It's absolutely full of a variety ideas to keep children occupied throughout the school holidays. Although inspired by summer things - seaside, flipflops, ice cream - this isn't a book that will be used only in summer. There are projects in it to inspire a child's imagination at any time of year. I mustn't forget to mention the most important bit in so many children's eyes - over 250 stickers!! All in all an excellent book filled with hours of creative fun."

"This was a great way to introduce my two year old to the idea he was having a baby sister. He loved finding and putting the stickers in the right places. We still read this story now that baby sister has arrived. It was very relevant and useful."
